Your organization´s key sector and mission:
EXOLAUNCH GmbH operates within the space industry, focusing on deploying satellites and providing launch services that enable access to space for a wide range of commercial, governmental, and scientific organizations. Our mission is to foster the democratization of space by making orbital access more affordable and regular, supporting innovative projects and cutting-edge technology developments that aim to solve real-world problems from space.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:
As the Director of Strategic Business Development at EXOLAUNCH GmbH, my role involves identifying and developing strategic partnerships and opportunities that align with our mission to expand access to space. I work closely with some of the world’s most talented scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs to facilitate their ambitions of reaching orbit. My focus is on leveraging my extensive network within the global innovation community to foster collaborations that propel technological advancements and enhance our service offerings in the space sector.

Your interest in STEM

My interest in STEM was born during my engineering studies at the Technical University of Berlin. The challenging curriculum and innovative environment ignited my passion for technology and problem-solving. Encouraged by my professors and inspired by the potential to influence the world through technology, I became deeply committed to pursuing a career in this field. Additionally, I’ve always felt a strong responsibility to motivate more young women to join STEM, striving to increase female representation and leadership in the sector.

My first role model was my mother, who instilled in me the values of perseverance and dedication from a young age. Her resilience and wisdom have always guided my personal and professional decisions, encouraging me to pursue my ambitions in the STEM fields. Currently, I am also inspired by the leadership qualities of Golda Meir, whose determination and strength in navigating political challenges resonate with my own challenges in the male-dominated space industry. Both women exemplify the courage and integrity I strive to embody in my role as a leader in the microelectronics sector.

Your studies

During my engineering studies, my main challenges included balancing theoretical knowledge with practical application, a common weakness I worked hard to overcome. My strength was in analytical problem-solving, which helped me excel academically. The opportunity to participate in advanced research projects was invaluable, broadening my technical skills and industry network. However, a significant threat was the underrepresentation of women in my field, which motivated me to advocate for more inclusivity and support for women in STEM.

Believe in yourself and never give up. Pursue your dreams relentlessly and don’t let a male-dominated environment deter you. Your unique perspective and skills are essential for innovation in our sector. Always remember that challenges are opportunities in disguise and facing them head-on strengthens your resolve and capabilities. Keep pushing forward, seek out mentors and allies, and carve your own path in this exciting field.

You at work

One noteworthy example of our commitment to DEIS is our support for Luna Gräfje, one of our most talented software developers, who is transgender. We fully support her, especially during her medical trips and other related needs. This reflects our broader commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive workplace where every individual is valued and respected. Supporting Luna not only enhances our team’s diversity but also strengthens our company culture, promoting a more inclusive environment for all employees.

I am most proud of my role in pioneering innovative partnerships between academia and industry within the space sector at EXOLAUNCH. These collaborations have not only advanced cutting-edge technologies but also facilitated the entry of numerous new satellites into space, significantly impacting global communication and research. Additionally, my efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion within our company have helped create a more welcoming and dynamic work environment, allowing us to attract and retain exceptional talent from diverse backgrounds.

Persistently pursue your goals with confidence and determination. The space industry, like many STEM fields, can be challenging, but your unique perspectives and innovations are crucial for its growth. Embrace every learning opportunity and don’t shy away from seeking roles that challenge you. Network actively and find mentors who can guide you. Remember, your presence and success can inspire change and help create a more inclusive environment. Always stand firm against adversity and never let external factors deter your spirit or ambitions.

Your point of view

Technology has the tremendous potential to empower women by providing access to information, education, and networks that were previously out of reach. It opens up new job opportunities, particularly in fields where women are underrepresented. By engaging in technology, women can also influence the development of products and services to ensure they meet the needs of a diverse population. Additionally, technology can provide platforms for women to connect, share experiences, and support each other’s growth and advancement. Ultimately, as more women shape technological advancements, we ensure a more comprehensive and equitable future.

Entering the field of microelectronics offers a fascinating opportunity to be at the forefront of technological innovation. My advice for women aspiring to this field is to embrace both learning and resilience. Focus on building a strong foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Seek out internships and hands-on projects that provide real-world experience. Networking is also crucial; connect with professionals in the field through conferences, seminars, and online platforms. Lastly, don’t be discouraged by challenges or setbacks. The path to success in microelectronics, like in many technical fields, can be demanding but incredibly rewarding. Remember, your unique perspective is vital for driving innovation and diversity in technology.

By 2030, I hope for a transformation in the microelectronics industry towards true equality. My aim is that every person, regardless of their personal attributes, experiences genuine equal opportunity in both obtaining and retaining employment within this sector. Achieving this requires transparent hiring practices, objective career progression systems, and active efforts to dismantle existing obstacles that impede fairness. Emphasizing a workplace culture that cherishes and leverages a variety of viewpoints is essential for the sector’s evolution and success. I envision microelectronics setting a standard for diversity and fairness, inspiring other sectors to follow suit.

To finish with

My core values in both my personal and professional life are education, transparency, and leading by personal example. Education is fundamental—it empowers individuals, fosters innovation, and drives societal progress. I advocate for continuous learning and development within our team and strive to support educational initiatives that enhance our field. Transparency is essential in building trust and accountability, not only within our team at EXOLAUNCH but also with our partners and stakeholders. I commit to maintaining open communication and clear practices. Lastly, I believe in leading by example. My leadership style is hands-on and grounded in ethical practices, aiming to inspire and guide my team to achieve their best while upholding our collective values.

One of my primary future challenges is to actively promote female leadership within the industry. I aim to create more opportunities for women, ensuring that they not only enter the field but also thrive in their careers. It’s essential to cultivate a work environment where women feel comfortable, supported, and valued. This involves advocating for policies that support work-life balance, mentorship programs, and initiatives that address gender biases. By doing so, I hope to contribute to a more diverse and equitable industry where women can excel and lead confidently.

By 2030, I see myself continuing to drive innovation and strategic growth within the space and microelectronics industries. My goal is to hold a senior executive position where I can influence major technological advancements and foster a culture of diversity and inclusion. I aim to be a key player in shaping industry standards and policies that support the advancement of women and underrepresented groups in STEM. Additionally, I aspire to mentor the next generation of leaders, helping them navigate and succeed in their careers. Ultimately, I hope to leave a lasting impact on the industry, contributing to a more equitable and dynamic technological landscape.
