My passion for science was nurtured from a young age. Both of my parents were mathematicians, and they instilled in me a love for mathematics and science. Their influence, particularly my mother’s, played a significant role in guiding me towards a career in STEM. While my mother provided an example of independence and confidence, I also pursued music at the conservatory, which fueled my creativity and complemented my scientific path.
Your organization field and mission
CEA-INES is a leading research institute in the field of solar energy, with a mission to advance renewable energy technologies, particularly photovoltaics. Our research focuses on developing innovative solutions to support the global transition to sustainable energy, integrating technological, environmental, social, and economic dimensions.
Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:
I am Delfina Munoz, a research engineer at CEA-INES, where I focus on photovoltaics. My role encompasses supervising theses, establishing research strategies, and managing the development of projects, especially European ones, which are strategic for research. I work part-time (80%) and contribute to consolidating new projects that promote sustainability.
Your interest in STEM
My first role model was undoubtedly my mother. Her independence, both financially and professionally, was a source of inspiration. Presently, I continue to be inspired by women in STEM who successfully navigate both personal and professional challenges, showing that it is possible to find balance and make significant contributions.
Your studies
One of my biggest challenges was managing the dual pursuit of a career in music and science. Balancing my time and energy between these two demanding paths required perseverance, organization, and a strong support system. However, this challenge also became a strength, as music enhanced my creativity, which I applied to my research in photovoltaics.
My advice to young girls and women is simple: be yourself, listen to your inner voice, and follow your dreams. Don’t be afraid to challenge norms or to seek out your support pillars, whether they be family, friends, or other resources. A career is rarely linear, and finding your own path is crucial.
You at work
Yes, one initiative that stands out is the “Women in PV” event that I am involved in organizing. This event, part of the 41st European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition (EU PVSEC 2024), promotes gender diversity and inclusion in the photovoltaic sector. It highlights women’s contributions, addresses the challenges they face, and suggests strategies to improve their representation.
I am proud of the various roles I have held throughout my career, from being a researcher to leading a laboratory, to my current position as a senior expert in photovoltaic cell research. My ability to contribute to both technological advancements and gender diversity initiatives has been a highlight of my journey.
To those who aspire to a career in this sector, I would advise them to embrace who they are and to remain strong in the face of challenges. It’s important to accept that a career is not about conforming to molds or expectations but about finding a personal balance between work, family, and other passions. Never hesitate to reach out for support when needed.
Your point of view
Technology can empower women by creating opportunities for them to thrive in various fields, particularly in STEM. It provides tools for innovation, creativity, and problem-solving, which are essential for driving societal and economic progress. By improving access to education and resources, technology can level the playing field, enabling more women to enter and succeed in sectors traditionally dominated by men.
My advice is to dive into the field without hesitation. Microelectronics is a dynamic and rapidly evolving sector where women can make significant contributions. It’s important to stay curious, continually learn, and seek out mentorship opportunities.
By 2030, I hope to see a significant increase in gender diversity and inclusion within the microelectronics sector. DEIS should become the norm, with equal representation, supportive policies, and an inclusive environment where women and underrepresented groups feel valued and empowered.
