Your organization´s key sector and mission:
CSIC’s key sector is Research, and its mission is to coordinate, promote, develop and disseminate scientific and technological multidisciplinary research, in order to contribute to the progress of knowledge and economic, social and cultural development: as well as to train researchers and provide advice to public and private entities in these fields (article 4 from CSIC Statutes).
Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:
Scientific researcher. Main subject: nanotechnology and nanoscience applications for energy recovery.
Your interest in STEM
I decided to study Physics at the university because it was my favourite subject (along with mathematics and foreign languages) and then I started collaborating with research groups at the end of the studies.
I do not know if it was my first role model, but my four female cousins, which are older than me, were all in STEM: mathematics-physics, chemistry, engineering and informatics. For me it was quite all right to follow their lead.
Your studies
At first, to combine the studies with other activities (sports, language learning, teaching…) in a successful way. At some point, to take care of my family to some extent because of a severe illness of my mother while studying (but it all come all right at the end).
Just do it, if you feel that you like it (I would advise exactly the same to a boy). It is hard, but it is worth it.
You at work
In our institute we have an Equality Commission, which pursues to study the situation of the IMN and to act to improve it.
I love my work, and I cannot name one thing I am prouder of. From the different projects that come out at the end, to the formation of students, there are many things that make me feel that it is worth it and that my contribution is important.
As in any other work, you have to work hard, do your best and find places where you can learn new things (again, I will advise the same to a boy).
Your point of view
I think knowledge can empower anyone. Knowing how things work, having an independent thinking, fighting to find solutions to varied problems… all these are important, and I think you will cultivate these if you work in a technological field.
Do not listen to anyone that tells you that microelectronics is too hard/difficult for you.
By 2030, I would love to see that any kid now can work in whatever they like. In the field of microelectronics (but, virtually, in any sector) I think that having diversity in gender, origin, believes, etc.) is important to reach more global solutions. Also, I would like the research to be more focused on sustainable resources, elements, etc.
To finish with
Hard working, multidisciplinarity, patience.
Develop applications with the materials and nanostructures I am working with that could reach the society.
I would like to continue in nanotechnology investigating novel applications, materials, etc. It is a work you do not get tired of, it evolves and changes almost every day.
