Your organization´s key sector and mission:
CSIC’s key sector is Research, and its mission is to coordinate, promote, develop and disseminate scientific and technological multidisciplinary research, in order to contribute to the progress of knowledge and economic, social and cultural development: as well as to train researchers and provide advice to public and private entities in these fields (article 4 from CSIC Statutes).

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:
Scientific researcher. Main subject: nanotechnology and nanoscience applications for energy recovery.

Your interest in STEM

I decided to study Physics at the university because it was my favourite subject (along with mathematics and foreign languages) and then I started collaborating with research groups at the end of the studies.

I do not know if it was my first role model, but my four female cousins, which are older than me, were all in STEM: mathematics-physics, chemistry, engineering and informatics. For me it was quite all right to follow their lead.

Your studies

At first, to combine the studies with other activities (sports, language learning, teaching…) in a successful way. At some point, to take care of my family to some extent because of a severe illness of my mother while studying (but it all come all right at the end).

Just do it, if you feel that you like it (I would advise exactly the same to a boy). It is hard, but it is worth it.

You at work

In our institute we have an Equality Commission, which pursues to study the situation of the IMN and to act to improve it.

I love my work, and I cannot name one thing I am prouder of. From the different projects that come out at the end, to the formation of students, there are many things that make me feel that it is worth it and that my contribution is important.

As in any other work, you have to work hard, do your best and find places where you can learn new things (again, I will advise the same to a boy).

Your point of view

I think knowledge can empower anyone. Knowing how things work, having an independent thinking, fighting to find solutions to varied problems… all these are important, and I think you will cultivate these if you work in a technological field.

Do not listen to anyone that tells you that microelectronics is too hard/difficult for you.

By 2030, I would love to see that any kid now can work in whatever they like. In the field of microelectronics (but, virtually, in any sector) I think that having diversity in gender, origin, believes, etc.) is important to reach more global solutions. Also, I would like the research to be more focused on sustainable resources, elements, etc.

To finish with

Hard working, multidisciplinarity, patience.

Develop applications with the materials and nanostructures I am working with that could reach the society.

I would like to continue in nanotechnology investigating novel applications, materials, etc. It is a work you do not get tired of, it evolves and changes almost every day.

Your organization´s key sector and mission:

The CSIC is the largest public research orga¬nisation in Spain. It is currently formed by over 13,200 people, distributed between the CSIC Corpora¬te Organisation and the 121 research institutes and three national centres, which are disseminated throu¬ghout Spain, as well as an institute in Rome. The CSIC’s research activity falls into three core areas, Society, Life and Materia, which cover the vast majority of academic disciplines.

The IMN-CNM is a medium-sized institute belonging to CSIC. Its research activity is focused on the advancement of fundamental and applied research in various topics within the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. We aim at manipulating matter at the nanometric scale to manufacture new materials and devices in order to meet the challenges that our society faces in the areas of HEALTH, ENERGY and COMMUNICATION. IMN-CNM also has a quality service for Micro and Nanofabrication (MiNa Laboratory) with cutting-edge technologies.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:
I am a tenured scientist at IMN-CNM, and I belong to the group “ES4TERM”. My current research focuses on biophysics, where I try to understand the role of electrical stimulation for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and to develop therapies based on it. One of my primary activities involves developing devices to provide electrical stimulation to cells cultured in vitro, and optimizing the electrical stimulation parameters. Additionally, I am the scientific responsible for the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused ion beam lithography (FIB) services in the MiNa Laboratory. I deeply enjoy the fabrication of nanostructures by means of electron and ion beam lithographies.

 

Your interest in STEM

I became interested in STEM in primary school, mainly I loved mathematics. In high school, I also discovered physics and chemistry, and I realized that I was genuinely interested in learning how our world works. After this, I decided to pursue a Physics Degree at the University. I did not have a strong formation in biology after university, as I chose a more technical path, but around 10 years ago I began learning it from online courses and I found it fascinating.

I was not aware of having a role model when I was young, but upon reflection, I realize that my parents had a huge influence on my decision to pursue a STEM career. My father had a technical background and job, and he was always happy to share and explain me things or help me with my homework from school. My mother could not access higher education due to family obligations linked to her status as a woman, so she had a very clear objective: that her daughters could study whatever they wanted and be independent. With these two inputs, I felt very free to choose a STEM degree and a scientific career that I liked without thinking too much about whether there were many women or not in it.

I should say that, in my youth, I did not know scientist except Marie Curie, but she was much more of an icon than a role model. Once I started my PhD, my thesis directors, Dr. Luisa González and Dr. Yolanda González (both women), became my role models. They taught me how to do science: to be patient, consistent, to design the experiments, to mount setups, to analyse results,… but mainly they showed me to find joy on the scientific process and in sharing knowledge and understanding. In the recent years, I am also inspired by my colleague, Dr. Sahba Mobini, which has a strong passion for science and learning, and she is always able to transmit me her enthusiasm. I really appreciate her strength to be consistent and original, and her ability to always extract something good out of every situation.

Your studies

My studies are now far away in time (I studied in the last century), so I have very possibly idealized them and cannot remember the challenges so well. I think I had too much self-exigence, which prevented me from enjoying more new and different things, but on the other hand I had the opportunity to meet great people and friends along the way. At the time, I missed more information about the different career opportunities, both in academia and industry, as well as more knowledge on the research done in the different departments.

My advice is that they study what they like, because it is worth it, and that they enjoy it and they help each other to achieve their goals. Moreover, their input and their approach can be the ones needed to complement all the possible visions in a team, and achieve a more complete solution to a problem. I will also tell them to put their full energy and enthusiasm in the studies they chose, because really, what is the purpose of going through something at medium gas in life?

You at work

I participate in the Equality Committee of my Institute (https://imn.csic.es/igualdad/), and we collaborate in a cooperative commission with others Equality Comittees of CSIC Institutes located in CSIC+UAM campus. Together, we have organized and participated in very interesting and formative courses about how to consider the gender perspective in science and engineering, and we have implemented an outreach activity to highlight and publicize the women who have won Nobel Prizes in Science: “Escape Road: In Search of Nobel and Non-Nobel Women Scientists”.

I feel proud of all the team work that I have developed, of all the joint efforts to write a project, make an experiment work or understand some new results. For me, the pleasure of sharing and achieving a common goal with your team (students, supervisors, colleagues,…) is very rewarding.

I would repeat the same advice that I gave for the girls and women that want to follow their studies in my sector: Go for it, because it is worth it, and try to find mentors and colleagues that can help you to achieve your goals. Moreover, consider that your input may be needed to provide a team with all the needed (or at least several and diverse) points of view to face a problem in a more complete way and therefore to find a better solution.

Your point of view

Technology is nowadays in the core of our society, and we use technology in so many aspects, from communication to health, from education to entertainment…, that women, as half of the population, need to be there and to have an equal access to the use of the technology, and to the development of the technology, so that they can have an equal share, participation and influence in all the different aspects of our society.

I repeat myself here: we need your point of view and your perspective so that we can have new ideas, new approaches to the problems as well as new questions and new problems to solve. The more diverse a team is, the more and better tools it has to tackle problems and generate new ideas.

I would like that the gender differences in the access to STEM studies decreases. I would like a more diverse participation in all disciplines and careers. Furthermore, I would like that all this also reflects in the access to responsibility posts.

To finish with

I believe in doing science to help our society and to help the others; in listening all the points of view and sharing knowledge and curiosity as a way of making the world more understanding and inclusive; and in the big pleasure of learning every day.

I aim to consolidate my research line on electrical stimulation, and to help developing experts in this field. I would like to continue feeling the passion of learning new things every day, and to be able to share it with the new students and colleagues. I also would like to have more participation in committees related with diversity, equity and inclusion.

I will continue to work as a scientist at IMN, and I hope that by them my research group, that it is now quite young, will be consolidated.
