Your organization field and mission

EUC- CERIDES focus revolves around the development, use, and evaluation of quantitative and qualitative methods to measure, assess, manage, and communicate risk, and to analyze, design, and implement decision-making mechanisms and systems. The areas of focus revolve around two basic pillars; risk and decision science with an application to several horizontal areas such as Security, Safety, Cybersecurity, Telecommunications, Critical Infrastructure Protection, and Industrial Processes.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:

In my role as Research Associate, I oversee projects related to Fire Safety in both Built of Environment sector and wildfires risk management (WFRM) for their prevention and firefighting. I am also organising training sessions for fire-fighters and engineers on the subject along with the projects results disseminations.

Your interest in STEM

My interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) began during my early school years, driven by a fascination with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. This natural inclination led me to pursue a degree in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. Throughout my studies, I was captivated by the practical applications of Mathematics and Physics, which deepened my passion for these fields. Witnessing the tangible results of applied science and engineering solidified my commitment to a career in STEM.

My first role model in the field of engineering was Margaret Law, a pioneering engineer known for her significant contributions to fire safety engineering. As one of the first women to gain recognition in this field, she worked extensively on understanding fire dynamics and improving building safety standards. Her research and innovations have had a lasting impact on fire safety practices, influencing both regulations and the design of safer structures worldwide. Law’s work remains foundational in the ongoing efforts to protect lives and property from fire hazards. Currently, I continue to be inspired by her legacy, as well as by contemporary leaders in fire engineering who push the boundaries of safety and innovation.

Currently, I am inspired by Dr. Cathelijne Stoof, whose passion and work on wildfire risk management (WFRM) are exemplary. I have had the opportunity to meet and discuss with her at conferences, as well as collaborate on European funding projects. Her dedication to advancing our understanding and management of wildfire risks continues to motivate me in my professional journey.

Your studies

My biggest challenge was understanding the study methods required for university and learning how to apply theoretical concepts and design principles to actual projects. This transition from theory to practice was initially difficult, but it ultimately strengthened my problem-solving skills and practical understanding.

Never doubt your potential. The field of engineering is vast and diverse, and your unique perspective and skills are valuable. Cultivate your curiosity and passion for learning. Stay engaged with the latest developments in your field and be open to exploring new areas of interest. Look for mentors who can guide you through your academic and professional journey. Your organization field and mission

Under the direction of European University Cyprus, the Center was born out of the synergies that were found between the Decision Support and Systems Optimization (DSSO) Laboratory and the Center for Risk, Safety, and the Environment (CERISE). Our main areas of interest include the creation, application, and assessment of quantitative and qualitative tools for managing, communicating, and measuring risk as well as for analyzing, designing, and putting into practice systems and procedures for decision-making. Our research is centered on two fundamental pillars: risk and decision science, which are applied to a number of horizontal fields like cybersecurity, safety, and security.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:

As a senior researcher, I am involved in EU funded projects and other scientific and research work. My research is based on risk analysis and vulnerability assessment models and methodologies, risk integration and propagation, risk evaluation and prioritization and development of risk assessment toolkit. My responsibilities include successful development and implementation of deliverables, preparation of technical documentation and project reports. Additionally, I present research findings in meetings, conferences and workshops and I organize the publication of research output in peer reviewed journals.

Your interest in STEM

My interest in STEM started at a young age, when I was at school. I used to like mathematics and programming very much, leading to pursue my career in computational mathematics.

My high school computer science teacher served as my first role model, teaching me the joys of programming and showing me the value of tenacity and ingenuity in solving technical and mathematical problems.

Yes, the CRiTERIA research center stands out as a positive example in DEIS. The center supports diversity in its workforce and its initiatives aimed at equity and sustainability. The center promotes women in the research and academia by increasing motivational factors and promoting development opportunities.

I’m most proud of leading the development and implementation of risk assessment toolkit for risks and vulnerabilities which was part of a European funded project. This achievement can also be used for the risk management and decision support of various companies and organizations.

Research in mathematical and computational sciences, presents a plethora of chances for impact and innovation. Establish a solid academic basis, look for mentors, and embrace networking to get knowledge from a range of experiences. Take on obstacles head-on; they present chances for personal development. Recall that your distinct viewpoint is essential for developing inclusive and successful technological and practical solutions. Remain strong and tenacious since your efforts will influence how the digital world develops in the future.

Your point of view

My personal and professional guiding principles are integrity, inventiveness, and inclusivity. Transparency and dependability are ensured in all actions by integrity. My desire to innovate motivates me to look for and apply solutions that enhance our field and address challenging problems. In order to foster a collaborative atmosphere where different viewpoints are respected and lead to more complex solutions as well as a more dynamic workplace, inclusivity is essential.

Maintaining a competitive edge in the quickly changing research and technological field, encouraging innovation and constant learning within my team, and advocating for greater diversity and inclusion in the tech sector are some of my upcoming challenges.

My goal is to be at the forefront of research and innovation by 2030, spearheading projects that will influence the direction of research and development. In my role as Senior Research Fellow, I oversee projects related to Security, Telecommunications around Critical Infrastructures. My responsibilities include identifying robust security frameworks, researching on the market needs and how it is aligned with the Cypriot crisis infrastructure and implementing novel technologies on security measures. Through strategic vision, I ensure our efforts on governmental authorities align with the trends of telecommunication industry best practices.

Your interest in STEM

From a young age, my interest in STEM was ignited by a natural curiosity about how things work and a strong desire to solve complex problems. This passion deepened throughout my school years, particularly in physics and mathematics. Engaging teachers and hands-on projects further nurtured this fascination, enabling me to explore various facets of technology and engineering, ultimately leading me to pursue a career in the quantum communication in the satellite communications field.

My initial role model was Ada Lovelace, as a pioneering scientist who has marveled and exemplified the importance of perseverance and creativity in the fields of mathematics and the novelty functions of computing. Today, I draw inspiration from leaders like Eleni Diamanti and Stephanie Wehner who are renowned for their innovative approaches to QKD and Pu Jian who is Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Cailabs.

Your studies

That following my dream had to be done in a certain way, even though life has incredible possibilities to reach your final goal.

You at work

There are a few things I hold dear. Gaining experience in various work environments has strengthened my resilience and work ethic, enabling me to handle challenging situations and people effectively. However, what I am most proud of is maintaining my focus on what I enjoy the most: working in the field of quantum communications and satellite communications.

Your point of view

Technology can enhance career growth opportunities by enabling women to acquire the essential skills needed to thrive in satellite communications and engineering.

The STEAM field is incredibly exciting, with numerous advancements anticipated that will significantly improve our present and future lives. It’s crucial to recognize and nurture the talent of girls with STEAM skills. Their involvement will not only bring them happiness but also benefit the entire world.

There are increasing opportunities to advance technological solutions for a more sustainable world, such as developing zero-energy systems with energy harvesting technologies.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:

I’m an Innovation manager focusing on startups. I coordinate two programs for startups and SMEs in the field of green ICT and neuromorphic and quantum computing, which can apply to us to have feasibility studies and even prototype developments carried out.

Your interest in STEM

From a very early age, I was fascinated by the fact that a single cake is created from individual ingredients. Later, through craft projects at home and, of course, great math and physics teachers at school.

My first role model was the mother of one of my sister’s school friends. She worked at a research institute and got me an internship while I was still at school.

Your studies

Getting through the first few semesters of materials science was the hardest part. As soon as the courses became more subject- specific, I found it easier to learn. Some professors lectured in a monotonous way and could not explain the material easily to students, which made it difficult to understand the content.

Be clear about what you want to do after your studies. Don’t be afraid to talk to women who are already working where you want to go. I am sure they will be happy to share their most important experiences from their professional careers with you.

You at work

Fraunhofer TALENTA is a program for all female university graduates who want to start their career in applied research with Fraunhofer.

Fraunhofer also offers an equal opportunities support program for all institutes.

I am most proud of having chosen jobs where I could develop my strengths, gain new skills and enjoy my work. I am currently delighted to be able to support so many research groups, start-ups and SMEs with their developments.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:

I’m a research associate within the Green ICT @ FMD Project with a specialization in environmental assessment associated topics. My role comprises various tasks including project management, identifying and calculating environmental potentials, research on future trends.

Your interest in STEM

I did not and do not have any role models in that particular sense. However, my mother always inspired and encouraged me to be independent as a person. Also, she always encouraged me in always putting effort, caring and giving my best in the things I do.

Your studies

I moved from Turkey to Germany at 18-years-old to pursue my bachelor’s in industrial engineering. Hence, the first few years in my studies were very challenging. First, because the school and university systems and requirements were very different than I was used to in my home country. Therefore, I was constantly failing at the beginning, which was very frustrating. Also, adapting to a new country took me some time.

Talk to students who study the subject you’re interested in. Try to get a comprehensive picture of the field, e.g. talk about the positive as well as the challenging aspects.

Also: Set goals, trust yourself, do your best, and don’t be afraid of asking people for help.

You at work

I got a scholarship within the Fraunhofer TALENTA program, which offers a funding for training that complies with personal career goals. The program is both for new graduates, but also for women in leadership positions. TALENTA enables a virtual network and exchange platform for women in STEM across different career levels.

So far, I’ve done the things that I’m interested in and drive me. Also, as a young women at the beginning of her career, I am proud that I am not afraid of openly communicating my opinions and needs without being afraid.

Talk to people working in the sector. Hear the perspective of both men and women at different ages.

Try to get a comprehensive picture of the field, e.g. talk about the positive as well as the challenging aspects.

Also: Set goals, trust yourself, do your best, and don’t be afraid of asking people for help.

Your point of view

Technology opens new opportunities, making it possible to pursue an occupation according to one’s own needs and interests.

Don’t be afraid to find out more about the different career opportunities. Microelectronics is a broad and very international field.

More (young) women from different backgrounds represented at many career levels within the different fields of microelectronics.
