It is a public Italian university focusing on education and training but also on research and innovation.
Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:
I’m a professor of chemistry and deeply involved with research. I have also many institutional appointments both at the ministerial level in Italy and at CNR.
Your interest in STEM
My interest in STEM has been present since I was a child. I’ve always been attracted to math and science, maybe because I was good at them or maybe because they fulfilled my innate curiosity. Having a father who was a scientist, I think, also helped.
My first role model was perhaps an aunt of mine who was a biologist. Then I had a mentor, a female professor of chemistry, whom I looked up to as an example of what I wanted to become.
Your studies
I struggled with the sense of not being good enough to successfully study physics. This became a bit of an issue when I started university. However, I fought against these negative feelings and eventually gained self-esteem.
Never give up and remember the quote by playwright Samuel Beckett: “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”
You at work
I’d like to mention the fact that I’m author of the editorial published on ACS Omega entitled: “Let Us Together Shine a Light on Women in STEM”
With my group we invented and developed the “Single Molecule with a Large Transistor – SiMoT” technology that now has reached a maturity at TRL6. SiMoT is an ultra-portable, point-of-care analytical immunometric test that performs like a molecular assay: it detects a single-antigenic or a single-nucleic-acid marker in 0.1 milliliter of a peripheral biofluid with an error below 4%.
Get a degree in Chemistry, Physics, or a Biotech subject and be curious about studying issues at the interface between biology and electronic devices.
Your point of view
Technology empowers women by providing access to education and skill development through online learning platforms and STEM programs. It creates economic opportunities via remote work, entrepreneurship, and financial services. In healthcare, telemedicine and health apps improve access to medical care. Networking and mentorship are enhanced through professional networks and support groups. Safety apps and online legal resources offer security and rights awareness. Technology also fosters political and social empowerment, access to information, and creative expression, helping women achieve greater equality and independence.
This is a great field that will continue to expand, offering excellent work and career opportunities.
I would like to see gender equality plans and roadmaps that will ensure greater access for women.

I will be four years from retirement as a professor, and I will actively be seeking to make a change in my career, perhaps by diversifying my activities. I aim to become more involved in consulting while also considering other ways to serve the community.
