Your organization´s key sector and mission:
Ion Beam Services operates in the semiconductor industry. Its main activity is the manufacturing, installation and maintenance of ion implanters for research centres.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:

I participate in the mechanical assembly and electrical connection of all implanter components. I also carry out functional tests, analyse measurements and diagnose the causes of malfunctions.

Your interest in STEM

Having followed a scientific path since high school, I’ve always felt more at ease in scientific disciplines than in literature, and over time this has become a real passion.

My role models are my parents. Having only daughters, they encouraged me to follow my own path and to dare to explore fields and professions that were once the reserved for men.

Your studies

My challenge during my studies was to be one of the best in my class, so I often had to pull all-nighters and work twice as hard. My scientific baccalaureate with honours in mathematics and physics earned me a scholarship to study abroad. This opened the door to many rewarding adventures.

My advice to young girls and women who want to continue their studies in this field is to jump into it without fear, have confidence in themselves and work hard to live up to expectations.

You at work

I’m the only woman in the manufacturing team, yet I’ve never felt alone with my colleagues. I can be myself and work serenely.

The first time I was asked to do the mechanical assembly and commissioning of a sub-assembly of the ion implanter (gasbox and electrical parts), there were no errors during debugging and installation.

My advice to young girls and women who want to pursue a career in our sector is to follow your convictions; it’s also a sector that’s open to everyone, regardless of gender or background.

Your point of view

Technology gives women access to information and education, increasing their skills and independence. In addition, online platforms and digital tools enable women to find employment opportunities or start their own businesses, contributing to their economic autonomy.

My advice to young girls and women who want to work in microelectronics is to take the appropriate courses of study to acquire the necessary skills in microelectronics, to learn about the field, to master the tools and software used in microelectronics, and to have confidence in themselves and their skills.

By 2030, I would like to see :

  • A more diverse microelectronics sector, with a balanced representation of women, ethnic minorities and other under-represented groups.
  • That opportunities for employment and for advancement in microelectronics are equal for all, regardless of gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status or other factors.
  • That the microelectronics sector is inclusive and welcoming to all, fostering a respectful, open and collaborative working environment.
  • That the microelectronics sector becomes more committed to sustainable development by reducing its environmental footprint, promoting responsible production practices and contributing to sustainable technological solutions to global challenges such as climate change.

Meriam Ben Moussa

Your organization´s key sector and mission:
IDEMIA StarChip is a division of IDEMIA specialising in hardware and chipset technologies for a wide range of applications, including SIM cards for telecommunications, smart cards for secure payment and biometric identity documents (passports, ID cards, health cards) and smart cards in telephones.  Our mission is to design and manufacture secure microcontrollers that meet the highest standards of security and performance.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:

I’m a digital engineer, designing digital circuits. I’m the technical lead on a project, so I work with other engineers to integrate complete systems. I also design, verify and integrate with other components to create functional and reliable products. Designing a product requires a lot of code, a lot of verification and R&D, and because we’re working on banking and identity products, there’s also a lot of security to integrate.

Your interest in STEM

Like many girls, I faced obstacles and discouraging remarks, saying that I couldn’t do it and that it wasn’t the right field for me. At first, I wasn’t particularly interested in science, especially maths. Over time, however, my perspective changed, and I could not see myself following a literary path. In high school, my technology teacher told me that studying medicine wasn’t for me, pointing out that I was ignoring an area in which I excelled. He encouraged me, even going so far as to talk to my parents. From that moment on, I knew that engineering was for me, and I followed that path with determination.

My inspiration has been and always will be my mother. From an early age I saw her working hard at an important job. Her independence and strength of character shaped the person I am today. I wouldn’t be the person I am without her. She inspired me from the very beginning and continues to do so every day.

Your studies

I did well in high school, but my biggest challenge was arriving in France. As a Tunisian, coming to France to finish my engineering degree was a real challenge. Combining my life as a student with that of a foreigner in a new country, especially for the first time away from home, was not easy. I had to work and study at the same time, which made me feel like I had to work twice as hard as everyone else. The pressure was intense, because I couldn’t fail with so many expectations around me. My challenge was not only academic, but also to succeed despite the weight of my family.

The most important piece of advice I can give is not to be afraid of asserting yourself. We often have good ideas, but we don’t always have the courage to express them. Another piece of advice is to go where others don’t dare to go, because that’s where we can shine the brightest. Finally, there are no bad questions; you just have to ask them and always stay curious. In a field like science, curiosity is essential. If we don’t question ourselves and look for answers, we can’t progress. Especially in R&D, where research means never taking anything for granted. Every piece of information must be examined from every angle to check its current and future validity, knowing that this future is constantly evolving.

You at work

When I arrived, there was already a Women’s Rights Day webinar showcasing women’s careers in the company, which was an excellent initiative. I was the second woman to join the digital team since Starchip was founded, which was something new for them. We have been working to achieve 50/50 parity in the team and we have succeeded. There are now 3 women and 3 men and I’m very proud of that. Achieving parity is a challenge because the work has to start much earlier. It’s difficult to recruit women, not because there aren’t enough candidates, but because few women are interested in these fields at school. Even at engineering school, only one tenth of the students were women.

What’s more, in terms of diversity, our team of forty people is very international, with members from Venezuela, Senegal, Brazil, Italy, Indonesia, Morocco and me from Tunisia.

I’m proud to have made my parents proud and to have risen to the occasion. For me, That is my greatest achievement.

For me, there’s only one golden rule: never let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do. If you believe in your ability to achieve something, don’t pay attention to other people’s opinions, just go for it.

Your point of view

Salaries are often higher in technology, giving women valuable financial independence that broadens their horizons. As a woman working in an often male-dominated field, it is an incredible source of strength to be one of the few female voices in a meeting, discussing a subject that you have mastered. Although it can be difficult at first to feel like you don’t belong, it’s hugely empowering to finally be listened to. As a young female graduate, going into a meeting with men with decades of experience and defending your ideas can be challenging. They may be ignored at first, but with persistence they will eventually be taken seriously because they bring a fresh perspective that is often seen as innovative and valuable.

I’ve got plenty! Microelectronics is an exciting field in many ways. It offers constant innovation and diversity, from aeronautics to smart cards. Never repetitive, it always offers new challenges and opportunities. In microelectronics, you can delve into fields such as cryptography, with dynamic research and a multitude of these emerging every day. For those with a thirst for knowledge and a love of novelty, this is a field where there is no room for boredom.

I’ve noticed that the authors of many research articles are often men, which reflects a gender imbalance in the field. There is a lack of female expertise, especially in certain areas. If I had to pick one improvement, it would be to see more research conducted and published by women, and an increase in female expertise in all aspects of the microelectronics field.

To finish with

I’d say seriousness, because in this field you have to be rigorous. Dedication is also crucial, because this job requires total commitment to your work. And finally, thoroughness, because the smallest mistake can have far-reaching consequences.

In a few years’ time, I’d like to have deepened my expertise in my field and acquired a wide range of additional skills. I also plan to manage a larger team, with a higher proportion of female graduates.

Nuria Salan

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:

At UPC-Barcelona TECH I am a professor of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering and a researcher in several topics related to Materials Science and Engineering. I am the deputy director of the Industrial and Aeronautical Engineering School of Terrassa.
In my President of the Catalan Society of Technology role, I am doing a hard task of dissemination related to highlighting the names of inventions of STEAM women in history, to help to create vocations in young girls.

Your interest in STEM

Since I was a little girl I loved to know about all sorts of topics. Everything I learned was fascinating and I tried to learn something different every day. I loved to read all the texts on my hands. And through reading, I found a lot of opened doors to other dimensions. Marie Curie was a brilliant role model for a girl like me, but also a very sad one, because of the sadness in her eyes. But “a future as a scientist” (even sad) seemed the most interesting option for me, because curiosity about knowing everything, was the main incentive.

Hedy Lamarr, Irene Joliot Curie, Laura Tremosa, my mother’s grandmother, my mother, my female friends and my students.

Your studies

To be valued for my skills and for what I am doing, rather than for who or how I am. If I’m good at doing my job, I want to be valued for that reason, independently of a woman or a man.

You at work

I am very proud of the girls mentoring program, “M2m”. I started it 11 years ago and has allowed many girls to reach their professional lives with a huge development of their empowerment skills. They are very good in their profiles, but by using the M2m program, some of them have improved their abilities for leading or for feeling strong in their workplaces, even when they are part of a minority.

I would like my students, years after they left the classroom, to remember me fondly. I love it when my former students greet me at any place with their smiley faces. This is very pleasant for me.

They must have their dreams, no matter how impossible they look, because someday they will realize that dreams have come true.
Their dreams are their own, and nobody can tell them about the right to have them. Those dreams can become a reality (or a part of them), and it will take a lot of work, and a lot of effort, but in the end it will be worth it. No hurries, no worries.

Your point of view

Highlighting the profiles of those brilliant women who contributed to making our lives much better, but unknown.
Highlighting their names and inventions to generate role models for our girls, because many of those brilliant women were the assistants of “brilliant science men”. I claim for their names and histories.
I am trying to include the name of Anna Bertha Ludwig (Roentgen’s assistant) in the X-ray discovery story. Or the name of Lise Meitner (Otto Hahn’s assistant) with capital letters, in the story of nuclear fission. Those names, as well as the names of Ida Noddack-Tacke (Walter Noddack’s assistant), and Mileva Maric (Einstein’s assistant), have been never included in textbooks but they should. Moreover, they deserve to be in. Making visible all those women who have been before us is necessary to create and promote vocations.

The STEAM world is a very exciting one, and there are many, many things expected to be done, expecting this talent that will help to make our current and future lives much better. All these girls with STEAM skills and their talent must be recognized and rescued. They will be happy in STEAM and we, as a part of the world, will be happy with them in it.

Please, do not miss them!

More than 30% of girls are involved in STEAM. All sorts of STEAM studies linked to microelectronics should have 50/50 in population. Then, it should be easy to find 50/50 working in microelectronics.

To finish with

My main challenge is that it is not necessary to highlight relevant profiles like mine, that the work of the women who have had to promote STEAM vocations naturally is part of history, without having to highlight it.

A challenge is that all boys and girls have the information and freedom to be what they want to be, without limits, without prejudice and without having to justify themselves.

Ambitious maybe.

I read, watch theatre, listen concert music, make sports, love scuba diving and travel all around the world.

Yolanda Lechuga

Your organization´s key sector and mission:
The University of Cantabria is a public institution of higher education which offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies. In addition to the basic mission of training, two other pillars of the activity of this organization are research and the transfer of knowledge to companies, socio-economic institutions and society in general.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:
I am part of the teaching and research staff, so I participate in the teaching of various subjects in the area of electronics technology in engineering studies, as well as being part of several research projects related to the design and test of integrated analogue, mixed-signal and heterogeneous microelectronic circuits. In addition, I am a member of the management team of the School of Industrial Engineering and Telecommunications as Head of Studies for the bachelor’s degree in industrial technologies engineering, the master’s degree in industrial engineering and the Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering Research.

 

Your interest in STEM

I cannot remember a specific moment when I began to be interested in STEM. I suppose it’s a matter of character, but I was always curious and dreamy, and that naturally led me in school to prefer those disciplines where abstract thinking is more useful.

When you are a female engineer, you learn to develop your career without relying on female role models, since they are few and little known. In school, the only female scientist talked about is Marie Curie, and in high school and university, your only references are your teachers. Once you start working, especially in the field of scientific research, your references are older colleagues who play the role of mentors and teachers, whom you meet at conferences, courses, or, in my case, in the office across the hall. Thanks Mar, by the way.

Age has taught me that nobody is perfect, which makes it difficult for me to have a role model that I find inspiring. However, it is true that I have been fortunate to meet great professionals and individuals in my environment, both men and women, whom I respect and who help me continue to want to improve myself.

Your studies

From an internal perspective, I am a shy and embarrassed person, which made it difficult for me to make friends and have study partners to rely on during my first year at uni. It was also extremely difficult for me to approach my teachers to ask questions. Something that I later realized as essential. In addition, I am nervous and very perfectionist, which sometimes affected my performance in assessment tests and deeply impacted me when the results were negative. Fortunately, I was aware of this and tried to develop strategies to overcome it, perhaps thanks to a maturity that was probably beyond someone so young. On the other hand, my class was the first under the new curriculum, so we had very little documentation to base our test preparations on, as we could not rely on exams, notes, or exercises from previous years. However, this was a positive lesson for us, as we learned to search for information independently, develop critical thinking and teamwork.

Firstly, being an engineer is not that traditional image we have of a person with a helmet and blueprints under their arm. An engineer takes existing scientific knowledge to develop technology, to create something new, or improve what we have, and put it at the service of society. If a scientist must be curious, the engineer is also dreamy and imaginative. It is not at all a boring job, nor does it involve getting greasy, or doing very physical work. Do not allow anyone to tell you that it is a male profession because you lack the character to lead teams, or that it is too difficult or demanding for your abilities. From experience, I have found that conflicts are better resolved by negotiating, and that we can be as curious, consistent, or creative as anyone. On the other hand, the electronics industry occupies the first place in the world among industrial sectors by volume of business and has largely allowed the technological transformation that we currently enjoy. It is present in all areas of engineering, to a greater or lesser extent, so you will never lack work, nor challenges. In electronics studies, as in the rest of engineering studies, fortune and success favors those who work and strive, not those who are smarter.

You at work

Within the University of Cantabria, there is an area of equality and social responsibility that provides the university community with a series of initiatives and programs. Among these, I would highlight those related to family reconciliation, such as the Concilia Plan, the Nursery School, and the regular organization of Children’s Campuses during holiday periods. These are the longest-running programs and facilitate the exercise of motherhood and fatherhood, contributing to promoting the co-responsibility of women and men.

As I have already mentioned, I am a very perfectionist person, which makes it difficult for me to name any professional achievement that I am particularly proud of. I believe there is still much for me to learn and teach, but if I had to choose, I am left with three achievements. In terms of research, probably the project I am most proud and grateful to have participated in is a collaboration with the Cardiology Department of the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital, opening the way to the research and development of ultra-low power active implantable devices based on MEMS sensors and wireless power transmission. The other two are much more general: I continue to enjoy learning and facing new challenges, despite the difficulties and the effort it will entail, and having students who remember me and stop to talk with me on the street to tell me that they are doing well and thank me.

My advice for women who want to pursue their work at the university is to be patient and persevering, as it often takes many years to achieve a certain level of job stability. Being a university lecturer encompasses multiple aspects that can be very satisfying both personally and professionally, but also very demanding, as you often must prioritize which aspect you need to pay more attention to at a particular moment in your career, without abandoning the other. You must enjoy research and try to complete your PhD within a good group that provides support. But you also should train yourself as a good teacher. We all know examples of teachers who knew a lot but were not able to convey it to their students.

On the other hand, research from a public institution allows you greater freedom, in terms of time, scope, and priority lines, than research within a company which is subject to the demands of its own circumstances. As a counterpoint, you often compete with these companies, directly or indirectly, and usually with fewer experience, economic, personal, and equipment resources. In this sense, having a good network of contacts from other research groups is extremely useful, so you will have to develop your social skills and dedicate time to attending conferences and meetings, as well as carrying out, at least, a research stay of several months, preferably abroad.

Your point of view

Throughout human history, technological development and progress have enabled at least a portion of the population to improve their living conditions. The fact that not all have benefited from such advancements is due to socioeconomic factors, rather than the inherently beneficial nature of the technology itself. When progress ensures that people, particularly women in vulnerable situations, have their basic needs met, they can shift their focus from mere survival to personal development, education, and the pursuit of their own interests. Moreover, technology provides them with tools to demonstrate their value to society beyond the confines of the domestic sphere. Managing these tools grants women access to knowledge and exposure to other cultures, enriching them personally and ultimately empowering them. It instills confidence by making them aware of their potential and convincing them that they face not a deficit of capabilities, but rather, if anything, a lack of opportunities.

My advice for women who want to work in microelectronics is similar to what I would give to anyone, man or woman, who had that interest, and that is to prepare to work in a very competitive and demanding sector, but with very high growth expectations. It is interesting, varied, and complex, so it is difficult to get bored. However, my personal experience has been developed in a research group and in a work environment at the national and international level where I have not suffered inequalities of opportunities compared to my male colleagues. I do not know if the situation in the private sector is different.

Honestly, I would like there to be no need to develop DEIS initiatives, at least in this sector, because we would have reached a situation where any woman who desires, and has the qualities for it, can achieve professional success in this technological field. I would wish that for this, she had role models that awakened her vocation and convinced her that she can achieve it, and that she also had equal opportunities for access and promotion.

To finish with

My values are effort, respect, resilience, equality, empathy, ethics, honesty, camaraderie, critical thinking with others and with myself, and hope.

From the perspective of my work as a teacher, I will have to make a significant study effort to adapt the methodology and content of my classes to new technological advances, for example, in terms of AI, and to make them more attractive to my students. As the person responsible for an engineering curriculum, my challenges will be: First, to identify those aspects of it that need to be updated, so as to better respond to the current and even future needs of the labor market, within a global framework, and to improve my negotiation skills to reach a consensus solution with the different actors involved in its implementation. And second, to promote innovative and creative actions to disseminate engineering studies to bring the profession closer to society, trying to eliminate preconceived ideas and misconceptions that hinder the attraction of talent, especially female talent. Finally, from the point of view of research, the challenges here are the usual ones, to obtain innovative solutions in a short period of time, since technological development in electronics technology is characterized by a demanding time-to-market and a high competitiveness.

I hope to continue in the same place, because I like what I do, but I would like to further develop certain aspects of mixed and heterogeneous circuit design that would allow me to collaborate with other groups on larger multidisciplinary projects.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:
Full Professor in the Electronics Engineering department at the Engineering School. Analog CMOS and MEMS design expert, PhD supervisor.

Your interest in STEM

Since primary school, mathematics was my favorite subject; while I grow up my interests were more related with physics and experimental science.

I was deeply inspired by one of my professors who taught me for the first-time physics using dedicated physics experiments at the age of 15. Now I am still inspired by scientists who are trying to push the frontiers of knowledge and engineers who try to provide new technological solutions for better and efficient devices.

Your studies

Being capable to develop strong analytical skills and solve problems related with physics and engineering. Being open to new approaches and new teaching styles.

Be good student, interact a lot with your professors, be curious, enthusiastic, and pro-active towards your main interests but being open to new ideas and approaches.

Design new electronic sensors based on microelectronics technology.

Develop Strong Foundations and Embrace Challenges.

Your point of view

Technology serves as a powerful tool for promoting gender equality. Can expand opportunities, enhance access to resources, and amplify voices and representation.
