I am a Faculty Staff at Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and leader of the Embedded System Design Laboratory.

Your interest in STEM

I am graduated from Science High School in Kayseri Turkey. Hence, my interest in STEM started when I was 14 years old.

My first role model was our Mathematics, Science, Literature and English teachers at Middle school, then Prof. Dr. Ahmet Dervişoğlu at university. My role models at present are Prof. Dr. Ahmet Dervişoğlu from ITU and Prof. Dr Bart Preneel from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

Your studies

My biggest strength was my mother. I was grown up in a small village in Turkey. My mother and aunt are two first university graduates of the village. Hence, my mother always tried to give the best education to me and found out about the opening of a better middle school than the one in the village which was a bit far away in the city. Despite all the suppression tries from the villagers she insisted to send me there.

I am the first student who took place in the Science High School exam, there were many villagers even some teachers continuously said “this was a dream, even if I pass the exam, a girl can not go to a boarding school which is for boys and girls.” This time my grandfather stood up for me and got full responsibility against the villagers. I got full support from my parents through all my education.

Trying to build my own family during Ph.D. study was one of the biggest challenges, I had my first daughter at the fourth year of my Ph.D. With the full support of my husband, I succeeded to finish it. Of course, being a mother of two children and trying to step up the career was the biggest challenge.

My advice is live your life in a balanced way. You can reach any point you want, but do not sacrifice your personal life for that. Find supportive people around you who understand your dreams and are ready to share happiness with you.

Your point of view

Women can work from home and have better balance with family. Advanced technology needs brain power instead of body power, hence the advantage of men is decreasing in works!

The opportunities in microelectronics are the same for women and men. It is a high technology area nothing to do with men power, hence girls can work in any level of microelectronics from design to production.

Support for women with children should increase.

No woman should have to choose her career over her family.

Your interest in STEM

During my school years, I consistently performed well in mathematics and science. However, at the time and despite my aptitude, I did not find them sufficiently inspiring to envision a long-term career in those fields. It was through a series of unplanned experiences after graduating university that I came to realize how much I genuinely enjoy such type of analytical and problem-solving work.

I do not have a singular role model; rather, my inspiration comes from observing individuals who are deeply passionate about and fulfilled by their work. Their genuine enthusiasm and dedication resonate with me far more than the influence of any one person.

You at work

The company I worked for placed a strong emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, with one of the most significant being the mentorship of young women professionals and interns, helping them build valuable networks and empowering them in their career development.

What I take the most pride in at work are the small, daily victories—those moments when a simple, clever idea has a significant impact and makes a meaningful difference. These instances of problem-solving, though seemingly minor, often prove to be the most rewarding.

It may be a cliché, but in the IT field, with some reading and research, almost anything can be accomplished.

Your point of view

In countless ways, but most notably by providing easier access to education, expanding employment opportunities, and fostering financial independence.

The industry needs greater flexibility in terms of working hours and work location to fully tap into women’s capabilities and allow them to make their most meaningful contributions.

At CEA-Liten, within the framework of INES, our mission is to advance research in renewable energy technologies, focusing particularly on photovoltaics. Our goal is to push the boundaries of innovation, meet industrial challenges, and uphold scientific excellence while maintaining the safety of our teams and ensuring we contribute to the energy transition in a sustainable and inclusive manner.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:

As a department head at CEA-Liten, I manage a team of around 90 researchers across three laboratories. My responsibilities are both strategic and operational. I oversee technical aspects of research, manage partnerships, and ensure that our work not only advances scientific knowledge but also has industrial and societal relevance. In addition, I serve as an ambassador for our areas of expertise, representing our department internally and externally.

Your interest in STEM

Initially, I was more drawn to the humanities and literary sciences. However, when I was 18, I decided to pursue an engineering path, marking a turning point in my career. This shift reflected my growing interest in scientific and technical subjects, despite not having a traditional background in STEM from the start.

My aunt played a pivotal role in shaping my career. She introduced me to applied research, a field that captivated me immediately. Although I initially considered journalism because of my love for inquiry and exploration, I found that research allowed me to ask questions and seek answers, much like journalism, but within the scientific realm.

Your studies

One of the biggest challenges I faced was integrating into an engineering school without having a solid foundation in scientific subjects. The first two years were particularly demanding, and I had to quickly adapt and learn how to be efficient. This challenge not only tested my abilities but also confirmed my interest in the field of engineering.

My advice is to accept that you don’t need to be perfect in everything, especially in higher education. Women often feel the pressure to excel in all areas, but it’s crucial to prioritize and choose your battles wisely. Dare to take opportunities and don’t limit yourself. I often think of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s quote: “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.”

You at work

One example that resonates with me is my experience at IMEC, where I had access to on-site childcare, allowing me to focus on my career without sacrificing my family life. At CEA, a similar approach exists, with support for women balancing their personal and professional lives. These initiatives help ensure that women can pursue their careers without guilt or having to choose between their family and professional goals.

I am particularly proud of the dual challenge I overcame early in my career—having my first child while simultaneously setting up a new technology platform and team at IMEC. I managed to balance both roles successfully, thanks to the support I sought, and achieved all my goals. Another moment of pride came after the COVID-19 pandemic, when I re-energized my teams and led them to significant scientific and partnership achievements.

I encourage young women to dare to pursue their ambitions and not let fear or societal expectations hold them back. Seize opportunities, even if they seem intimidating. It’s important to realize that success comes from prioritizing, not perfection, and to accept that no one can do everything at once.

Your point of view

Technology provides women with the tools to innovate, create, and solve problems in a variety of fields, particularly STEM. It can help level the playing field by offering access to education, resources, and opportunities that may have been limited in the past. With the right support and structures, technology can help women thrive in traditionally male-dominated sectors.

For those interested in microelectronics, I recommend diving in without hesitation. It’s a growing and dynamic sector, full of opportunities. Be curious, continuously learn, and seek out mentors who can help guide you. The field offers immense potential for innovation, and women have much to contribute.

By 2030, I hope to see a significant shift towards greater diversity and inclusion in the microelectronics sector. We need to create environments where women feel welcomed and valued, with equal opportunities to contribute and lead. Promoting inclusivity will be key to ensuring the sector thrives and meets the challenges of the future.

To finish with

In my role as department head, I value both humanity and high standards. It’s important to support my colleagues holistically, allowing them to express their identities and personalities while excelling in their skills. I believe in fostering an environment where people can grow and achieve their goals, in their own way.

The next major challenge I foresee is supporting the growth of photovoltaic gigafactories in Europe. This will involve guiding R&D teams through an acceleration phase, overcoming industrial barriers while upholding our societal and environmental values. It will also be important to continue promoting diversity and inclusion, ensuring that women have a strong presence in this transition.

In 2030, I hope to be actively contributing to the successful scaling of the photovoltaic industry, driving technological innovation while maintaining a focus on inclusion and sustainability. I envision playing a role in bridging industrial and societal goals, ensuring a balanced and forward-thinking approach to energy transition.

I take care of the pre-sales and after-sales of various UHF projects. I do training (in-house and external) and help customers if they have a problem with their UHF project.

Your interest in STEM

I’ve always liked manipulating objects in electronics, and I’ve always been better at math’s than French… as my studies progressed, this path came to me…

No, I have never been a fan of anyone, I just go my own way.

Your studies

I’ve always been naturally very stressed, so all the tests and assessments were a big challenge because I felt like I was my nerves.

You have to enjoy working with men and know how to take the make the most of being a woman in a man’s environment.

You at work

Our company works closely with the Résilience foundation, which helps to reintegrate injured soldiers.

What I’m most proud of is that I’ve been able to combine my professional life with my life as a mother.

You have to work hard, but I think that’s the basis of any profession, right?

Your point of view

The only difference between a man and a woman may be physical strength, which technology can more than compensate for.

I’ve never encountered any barriers in my job because I’m a woman. I don’t even see why the question should be asked. If you love the field, you should go for it.

We know that AI is going to take up more and more space, I just hope it doesn’t take up all the space …

My interest emerged at a young age, fueled by a natural curiosity and a passion for solving complex problems. It grew through a combination of personal curiosity, formal education, practical experiences, and professional commitment.

My first role model was my computer science teacher in high school, their approach in solving problems and the way they converted everything to algorithms always fascinated me.

Strengths: A passion and curiosity for always learning new things.

Weaknesses: The emphasis on theory in some courses limited the opportunity to learn programming.

EUC- CERIDES focus revolves around the development, use, and evaluation of quantitative and qualitative methods to measure, assess, manage, and communicate risk, and to analyze, design, and implement decision-making mechanisms and systems. The areas of focus revolve around two basic pillars; risk and decision science with an application to several horizontal areas such as Security, Safety, Cybersecurity, Telecommunications, Critical Infrastructure Protection, and Industrial Processes.

In my role as Research Associate, I oversee projects related to Fire Safety in both Built of Environment sector and wildfires risk management (WFRM) for their prevention and firefighting. I am also organising training sessions for fire-fighters and engineers on the subject along with the projects results disseminations.

Your interest in STEM

My interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) began during my early school years, driven by a fascination with Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. This natural inclination led me to pursue a degree in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. Throughout my studies, I was captivated by the practical applications of Mathematics and Physics, which deepened my passion for these fields. Witnessing the tangible results of applied science and engineering solidified my commitment to a career in STEM.

My first role model in the field of engineering was Margaret Law, a pioneering engineer known for her significant contributions to fire safety engineering. As one of the first women to gain recognition in this field, she worked extensively on understanding fire dynamics and improving building safety standards. Her research and innovations have had a lasting impact on fire safety practices, influencing both regulations and the design of safer structures worldwide. Law’s work remains foundational in the ongoing efforts to protect lives and property from fire hazards. Currently, I continue to be inspired by her legacy, as well as by contemporary leaders in fire engineering who push the boundaries of safety and innovation.

Currently, I am inspired by Dr. Cathelijne Stoof, whose passion and work on wildfire risk management (WFRM) are exemplary. I have had the opportunity to meet and discuss with her at conferences, as well as collaborate on European funding projects. Her dedication to advancing our understanding and management of wildfire risks continues to motivate me in my professional journey.

Your studies

My biggest challenge was understanding the study methods required for university and learning how to apply theoretical concepts and design principles to actual projects. This transition from theory to practice was initially difficult, but it ultimately strengthened my problem-solving skills and practical understanding.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:

I am an associate professor. I carry out studies specifically in the wireless communication sector and I teach telecommunication subjects.

Your interest in STEM

During my high school years, I went to Liceo Classico, a high school mainly focused on humanities. I choose to start my path in the field of engineering casually, driven by people, as professors and family, that believed I could do everything given my good results in all the subjects.

I was inspired by the Professor I chose to conduct my PhD research thesis with. Moreover, I had the chance to work in Sweden for four years, and the capacity of Professors to work efficiently and professionally has fascinated me. Most of the professors I met were men, since unfortunately this is mostly a men-led sector.

Your studies

Moving from my high school to a place in which the 90% are men, was weird and difficult to manage, also in terms of proving that I was capable as much as all the others. Another difficulty I had was that my competences in math were not as good as the ones of other students coming from more scientific studies. As I said before, by pursuing a high school mostly focused on humanities, at the beginning was a bit difficult to me, but I could manage it and now I do what I always desired.

It can be done, without listening to the stereotypes that surround us. Moreover, as I said above, I didn’t have strong basics in math, but I was able to follow my passion, overcome the obstacles and reach my objective.

You at work

Two Professors from the Parma University, Federica Poli and Chiara Lasagni, organized an event called “Girls in STEM”, aimed at showcasing ten different success stories on women in STEM to high school students. During this event, I spoke about how to foster the interest of young women for the STEM field.

Generally, I found my job very exciting and each time that one of my work is published, I feel very satisfied and proud of my work.

Even if the topics seem not to be very interesting and not tangible, everything that has to do with telecommunications is surrounding us, and it’s very fascinating and actual (for example, now we are working on the famous 5G or 6G). You do not have to be discouraged; with passion everything is possible.

As a Sensor Design Engineer at Melexis, my primary responsibilities include developing high-fidelity models and simulations for new sensor concepts.

Your interest in STEM

My interest in STEM was nurtured from a young age by my grandfather. He always encouraged me to explain what I had learned at school by creating mock exams for him, which I would then correct on a board. This playful yet educational activity not only deepened my understanding of various subjects but also sparked a genuine curiosity and love for learning. This early encouragement grew stronger as I delved deeper into physics and mathematics in high school, eventually leading me to pursue a career in engineering.

My first role model was my grandfather, who was also an engineer. He pursued his career in Paris as an engineer in airplanes. His dedication to engineering and his passion for problem-solving greatly influenced me.

Your studies

My strength comes from my background which draws on both theoretical physics and engineering, allowing me to approach problems from multiple perspectives and effectively integrate diverse concepts. My weakness was due to the lack of well-equipped laboratories in my university, making it difficult to apply my theoretical knowledge to practical situations.

I believe success is when hard work meets opportunity. Mine was participating in international research projects and conferences, expanding my network, exposing me to global perspectives, and enriching my academic experience. Competitiveness and rapid technological progress in the field of microelectronic technologies can pose a threat.

My advice to girls and women is to pursue their dreams in areas where they feel they can excel. The STEM field is very broad and offers many opportunities for those who embrace challenges as learning experiences.

You at work

Diversity at Melexis goes beyond accepting different ethnicities, orientations, and social classes; it is also about respecting each other’s opinions on any subject. In our team meetings, we see that no matter how many years of experience one has, their background, or their position, everyone’s voice is heard. This culture of inclusion is strongly promoted by our team lead, who ensures that all team members are encouraged to share their ideas and perspectives, fostering an environment where innovation thrives.

I am most proud of having the opportunity to lead the ‘Stelaxis’ project, which focuses on developing a robotic 1D joint. In my role, I perform simulations and contribute to the measurements, ensuring that our designs are both theoretically sound and practically viable. Identifying the right colleagues to assist with specific tasks is a key part of my role, leveraging their expertise to drive the project forward. Additionally, I promote our project externally by presenting at conferences and engaging with the broader engineering communities.

I also believe that women in corporate environments can and do help each other grow. Women have been remarkably successful in leading and innovating while maintaining a very human approach toward their coworkers. This supportive and collaborative attitude fosters a positive and productive work environment. Let’s embody that and break down the stereotype that says otherwise.

Your point of view

For women who are dominated by their circumstances or environment  and are denied the right to learn, technology offers a lifeline. Through digital platforms, they can access a wealth of educational resources and opportunities, breaking down barriers to learning.

Even AI has made it possible for women to ask whatever they want about anything they need in their lives. This means that any woman, regardless of her circumstances, can seek and receive help on how to navigate challenges without barriers. Technology amplifies women’s voices and provides them with the tools to connect with global networks.

As women have successfully broken into jobs traditionally designated for men, we can continue to push boundaries and prove that we are unstoppable.
