The Cluster of Mechatronics and Automation (CMA) is one of the first deep-tech clusters in Bulgaria, established in 2006 to leverage the industrial capacity of its members (private SMEs, R&D institutions and NGOs) in the fields of Industry 4.0, mechatronics, automation and robotics. It is an innovation-driven deep-tech cluster that promotes IoT and Industrial IoT (IioT), factories of the future, resource sharing, energy efficiency, sustainable and resilient business models and smart growth. Interest in STEM since school time, later on studied civil engineering.

Role models valued by me are those of professionals – any role model where the person has the expertise needed for that role model. When this is combined with natural leadership, it has the potential to become inspirational.

If one has the inner call for a given area to study, it and further develop in that area – follow it.

You at work

Twin transformation is an integral part of mechatronics, which is why the Cluster companies are drivers of digital transformation, primarily Industrial Internet of Things (IioT), AI and other advanced digital technologies.

Don’t follow others’ models. Extend your learning experience from them while creating your own one.

Your point of view

Technology can empower anyone as long as one knows how to develop and use it.

Engineering is an excellent and prospective area for both women and men as long as they are professionals. It is a wrong perception that it this field belong primarily to men.

BIOEMTECH is a preclinical Contract Research Organisation and imaging systems’ manufacturing company. BIOEMTECH Laboratories, facilitate preclinical drug discovery in all stages of drug testing and evaluate promising radio-drugs towards the clinics. Our mission is to partner with pharma companies in creating new, safer and more efficient pharmaceuticals for the clinics.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:

In my role as COO of BIOEMTECH Laboratories, I ensure that all laboratory operations run smoothly and are continuously updated and upgraded, in a way that they allow the company to constantly keep growing. As Co-Managing Partner, I work towards making and sustaining BIOEMTECH as a leader in the preclinical drug discovery sector.

Your interest in STEM

Ever since my school years, I was intrigued and attracted by mathimatics and physics. At first, it begun as mind games or quizzes, solving problems and equations. Then after university, I realized how science can explain and solve the problems we face in everyday life, business and economy and deeply appreciated their impact, in a different way.

The truth is that I never had very specific role models. I always liked reading biographies and interviews of successful people (i.e., people that made an impact), but also looked relaxed, happy and in control. These could be actors (like Steve McQueen), jornalists (like Maria Rezan), businesspeople (like Steve Jobs) and sometimes scientists (like Dimitris V. Nanopoulos). But today, I have come to highly admire any person who follows his or her fulfilling purpose, creates an impact in his/her field and finds balance between an apiring career and a gratifying everyday life.

Your studies

I would say something like the following:

  • Strengths: Strong analytical and communicational skills and a keen interest in science and data.
  • Weaknesses: Working (even though in research) while doing my PhD, sometimes made me lose my focus on my studies.
  • Opportunities: Access to cutting-edge universities and inspirational people.
  • Threats: At some points, I flirted with the idea of following different fields (outside science), that could have guided me in a very different route.

Do it for yourself. If you enjoy science, dive into it and get the most out of your studies. Be curious and talk to as many people as you can find in your way. It is from peoples’ stories that you might discover what you want to do with your life. Create a strong network, both with your classmates and teachers and try to maintain it after the completion of your studies.

You at work

In our company, we are notorious for selecting new collaborators mostly on their personality, attitude and enthusiasm, rather than just their pure CV and technical skills. This means that vibrant people, with strong personalities, very different to each other, come together and create things. I believe that this is a true example of diversity that produces beautiful results.

On a company level, I am proud of having created a team and infrastructure, that allows high quality research to be done and at the same time (usually) for people to enjoy doing so. On a personal level, I am proud of having made all the professional choices, that today make me feel that every day, I can work on the things that I want, like, and choose and not the things that I must or should.

Work hard, but without making a fuss about it. Mind your own business, don’t listen or be influenced by people you do not admire. Be creative and have confidence, show your work in a respectful and elegant way. Create a strong network of people you admire and learn how to communicate with data. Having a strong network will give you access to more opportunities and knowing how to exploit and work with technology and data, will give you higher chances to win these opportunities.

Your point of view

I believe that data empower women. When a woman is educated in gathering and communicating data-driven opinions, results and facts, this is a skill that always prevails.

Understand deeply the nature of your work, learn how to communicate with data and numbers and how to demonstrate your work without making a fuss, but in an eloquent way. Prevail by elegance and quality.

As in all sectors, I would like that we lack the need to talk differently about men and women and focus on results alone. Things are progressing fast, and I believe that we might reach the stage where we only talk of people, and their needs and strengths.

To finish with

If I had to choose the most important values for me, I would say attention to detail, courtesy with good humour and data-driven decisions and discussions. These are values that I communicate in my everyday life and always try to find collaborators that share these sincerely. I am lucky enough to be working with people that see these values eye-to-eye with me and often these create a go/no-go decision for new collaborations.

I feel that the biggest challenge will be to not stop learning and find the way to maintain a clear view of the cutting-edge scientific progress, so I can be part of the most innovative and promising solutions in the drug discovery field. Also, to keep growing the team and the company and maintaining the quality of products and services, along with the culture and values of the people that started the company.

Things are evolving very fast, both for our company and the drug discovery field, so this is hard to say. I know I want to remain in the drug industry and keep working towards better therapies and also be able to have business partners that I admire and gain pleasure from our everyday collaboration and co-creation. If I have these things, I will consider my plans achieved in 2030.

Anne Kaminski Cachopo

Your organization field and mission

At Grenoble INP, PHELMA, our mission is to train future engineers in physics, microelectronics, and related fields, contributing to the development of cutting-edge technologies, particularly in photovoltaics. Our focus is to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address technological, societal, and environmental challenges.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:

I am a professor at Grenoble INP, teaching physics and microelectronics at PHELMA. The school trains between 300 and 350 students per year over a three-year period. In parallel, I conduct research at the CROMA center, focusing on photovoltaics. As the head of the laboratory, I manage scientific oversight, budget, personnel safety, and human resources.

Your interest in STEM

My passion for science started very early. I was particularly fascinated by mathematics as a child, and in middle school, discovering physics, especially the study of atoms and electrons, was a turning point for me. It sparked my imagination and fueled my desire to delve deeper into the fascinating world of science.

Marie Curie has always been a key inspiration for me, not only because of her remarkable contributions to science but also because we share Polish roots. My mother, who admired Marie Curie’s accomplishments, also inspired me by instilling in me the belief that anything is possible for women. In addition, Simone Veil and several female colleagues in leadership positions have served as role models through their determination and success.

Your studies

My educational path was straightforward until I faced a major challenge during my final year of high school when I was diagnosed with cancer. This was a difficult period that affected my self-confidence, but my studies became a source of strength and helped me overcome the ordeal. Completing my PhD marked a significant turning point in my life, where I truly found my place and thrived academically and professionally.

My advice to young girls and boys is to have confidence in themselves and their abilities. Listen to your motivation, dream big, and be ambitious. There are many pathways in science, and it’s important to explore different fields and find your passion. Most of all, believe in yourself and your potential.

You at work

We have implemented several initiatives to promote inclusion and gender equality, addressing issues like the “glass ceiling.” These initiatives include raising awareness about cultural and gender biases, offering internships specifically for women, launching mentorship programs, and ensuring gender parity during recruitment processes. All of these efforts aim to make our fields more attractive and accessible to a diverse group of individuals.

I am particularly proud of the dynamic environment we have created in the laboratory I have been leading for the past three years. In the field of photovoltaics, I’m honored that our expertise is sought after for various projects, consulting, and partnerships, which reflects the recognition of the quality of our work and my skills as a leader.

Confidence is key. Pursue your ambitions with determination and don’t be afraid to take up space in a traditionally male-dominated field. There are numerous pathways to success, and it’s important to remain adaptable and open to new opportunities. Believe in your potential and be ambitious.

Your point of view

Fields like photovoltaics and microelectronics offer a diverse range of materials, techniques, and challenges. These sectors provide the opportunity for continuous evolution throughout one’s career. They are also directly linked to addressing scientific and societal challenges, particularly climate change. For young people, these are exciting fields where they can make a meaningful impact on society while building rewarding careers.

I highly recommend the field of photovoltaics and microelectronics to young people. These are dynamic and evolving sectors, offering countless challenges and opportunities. Microelectronics, in particular, is vast and varied, with activities ranging from research and development to practical applications. The connection with climate issues makes these fields even more relevant and motivating.

By 2030, I would like to see equal representation of women and men in the field of microelectronics, with all individuals being acutely aware of the climate challenges we face. I envision a society where sustainability and environmental concerns are seamlessly integrated into both education and the workplace, driving innovation and responsibility in the sector.

I firmly believe in the importance of resilience, confidence, and ambition. Throughout my career, these values have helped me overcome challenges and make meaningful contributions to my field. Muriel Merle

Your organization´s key sector and mission:

STMicroelectronics’ mission is to design and manufacture electronic chips.

With one of the broadest product portfolios in the industry, STMicroelectronics is a global leader whose semiconductors make a positive contribution to our daily lives, now and in the future. In fact, ST chips are everywhere… ST is an international Franco-Italian company, partly owned by the French and Italian governments. We employ over 50,000 people worldwide, including more than 11,000 in France.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:

Since 2021, I’ve been asked to work on the operational management of the Micro-PackS platform. This platform, set up in collaboration with ST and other manufacturers and academics in the region, enables local companies to benefit from equipment and technical expertise to develop their prototypes. This position allowed me to develop my network, by meeting local companies, academics and research laboratories, as well as all the institutions that subsidise R&D projects. At ST, I therefore moved on to innovation, ecosystems and collaborative projects.

Together with my teams, I’m responsible for instilling a culture of innovation in all employees at the Rousset site and showing that innovation is within everyone’s reach. To do this, we work on training employees and setting up innovation methodologies and programmes. We also have a FabLab with equipment (3D printers, laser cutters, etc.) and specialists in electronic programming. It is open to all ST employees to help them with their professional or personal projects and to encourage their creativity.

Finally, I’m also the coordinator of the Research Tax Credit (CIR) and of collaborative projects subsidised under various programmes.

Your interest in STEM

I fell into it by chance, because I’d always wanted to become a vet. I didn’t get into the preparatory classes that I wanted to enter after high school. I opted for a Diplôme d’études universitaires générales (DEUG) in sciences, mainly biology, chemistry and mathematics. It was during these two years that I discovered chemistry, and I really liked it. So, I went on to do a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, followed by a master’s degree and a postgraduate diploma (DESS) in chemistry.

Your studies

I didn’t really have any major challenges during my higher education. It happened more before my studies, when I had to repeat a high school year. The hardest part for me was accepting that I was repeating a year, because I hadn’t really faced failure before and realized that it didn’t just happen to other people. When I saw my friends moving on and me repeating a year, I swore it would never happen to me again. So, my big challenge was to succeed in my studies.

I didn’t feel it too much during my studies, but from the start of my professional life I was confronted with a very masculine and somewhat boorish environment. The advice I can give is to have a great ability to adapt, to be benevolent and to accept that you’re a woman. You shouldn’t try to be equal to men in the way you work, manage and behave. Women have management skills that I think are more intelligent than men’s, and that is an asset in a male environment. We approach situations and conflicts differently, with less ego, and we don’t need to assert ourselves in the same way as men.

So, you have to know how to assert yourself as a woman. I often tell the young women I meet that being kind isn’t the same as being weak, and that you have to be sensitive and assertive at the same time. You also need to have self-confidence, while retaining a degree of self-doubt, so that you can listen to others and take a step back from things. My final piece of advice is to feel legitimate, even in situations where you don’t necessarily have the technical skills, but you still have the ability to understand and think things through to come up with a criticism or an interesting idea.

You at work

We have many programmes within ST. In HR, we have a department dedicated to CSR and inclusion issues. In terms of gender equality, there is also an annual budget that is negotiated to compensate for salaries that are perceived to be lower. We also have a strong ‘sustainability’ component, with programmes to welcome interns, people with disabilities, LGBTQIA+ people, etc.

What I’m most proud of is that I’ve never left a team without the team telling me they were sad to see me go. For me, that’s a success, because each time, I felt that I had succeeded in doing what I wanted to do, i.e. successfully uniting a team around a project. It’s recognition of my management and I’m very proud of it, because it hasn’t always been easy.

Your point of view

Science is a bit more open to women, whereas pure technology is a bit more difficult because many technical professions are not very well known and some of these professions are not very attractive to women because they are physically difficult, although some women do go into them.

I would say that technology can open up new horizons because it brings science and technology together, whereas before we used to separate the two. I notice that women are much more interested in many things than they used to be, and it seems to me that my generation has brought up its children with this technological openness. I would say that the new generation is also much more open to the subject because they are surrounded by technological objects. There are fewer barriers and it’s this environment that makes it more promising for women.

My advice is not to be afraid of the environment and technology, because microelectronics cannot be the responsibility of just one person. There are a multitude of professions surrounding microelectronics which, when combined, enable chips to be developed and products to be sold. There are different levels of involvement in chip technology, requiring different levels of expertise. And working in microelectronics means being at the heart of innovation and helping to build the world of tomorrow, because everything that comes out of our factories is in the objects of today and will be in the objects of tomorrow. It also provides a wealth of knowledge and insight into the possibilities offered by microelectronics and technology, particularly in relation to major issues such as climate change.

A woman CEO of STMicroelectronics. I’d like to see more women in senior positions by 2030. We have a woman director of ST France, so that’s a start and the company is working on it. And beyond microelectronics, I’d like to see a woman president in France and elsewhere in the world. Having more women in positions of power would, in my opinion, bring a little gentleness.

To finish with

What’s important to me is integrity, respect, kindness and tolerance. I believe that with these values we can work well and move forward together.

My professional ambition is to be serene until the end of my career, i.e. not to find myself in difficulty and to be able to continue working serenely, which has not always been the case. I don’t particularly want to move up the ranks because I now have a life balance that makes me happy. Instead, I’d like to move around the company in positions that allow me to develop and enjoy coming to work.

I want to continue to have responsibility because I like it, to remain at a hierarchical level that allows me to be heard, to participate in development and change in a meaningful way. I want my voice to carry weight. In 2030, I hope I’ll still be at ST, in a job that gives me the same sense of fulfilment and commitment as my current job.

Patrizia Caraveo

Your organization´s key sector and mission:
Research in astrophysics

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:

I’ve always worked with high-energy astrophysics and managed gamma-ray astronomy missions. Lately I’ve been working on a ground-based gamma-ray astronomy project with INAF’s participation in a large observatory called the Cherenkov Telescope Array, CTA.

Your interest in STEM

During my high school years, I cultivated a passion for physics. The interest in astrophysics was born during the university years, thanks to the optional courses I took on astrophysics and cosmic physics. I decided to write my thesis on a newly launched European gamma astronomy satellite. From this, I then moved abroad and once back in Italy, I was selected to start working at the CNR (the Italian National Research Council).

I don’t have a clear “role model”. The only thing I can share is that the biography of Marie Curie, written by her daughter, captured my attention when I was a little girl, and her personality impressed me.

Your studies

No one in particular. I was very determined in doing what I wanted to, without thinking too much about the future.

Never accept when people say that this job is not for women, which often happens.

You at work

There are no dedicated initiatives, but there is a lot of attention to the subject. When organizing events, meetings, conferences, we always pay attention to topics such as inclusion and sustainability.

I’ve had some important, recognized achievements. The one I am most proud of is having received the Enrico Fermi Award in 2021 for understanding the nature of a particular star, the star Geminga, to which my husband and I have given the name and on which we have focused our studies for several years.

Don’t be discouraged by prejudice, women are absolutely capable of doing everything. I am among these women who managed to realize their dreams. So, what I always say to my students is that the most important quality, besides the desire to study, is to never get discouraged, to be determined and pursue what you want to achieve. Remember that luck only helps people who are ready to welcome opportunities.

Your point of view

Technology is important, learning how to use it is important. It should not be seen as an obstacle, and therefore it is necessary for women to learn how to use it.

To finish with

The importance of research to improve the quality of life (for example, WiFi was invented by radio astronomers). The development of culture as part of life. People should commit to improve their culture and cultivate knowledge.

Being able to carry out the projects in which I am involved, as well as continuing with the activity of scientific dissemination to the public.

I work closely with some of the world’s most talented scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs to facilitate their ambitions of reaching orbit. My focus is on leveraging my extensive network within the global innovation community to foster collaborations that propel technological advancements and enhance our service offerings in the space sector.

Your interest in STEM

My interest in STEM was born during my engineering studies at the Technical University of Berlin. The challenging curriculum and innovative environment ignited my passion for technology and problem-solving. Encouraged by my professors and inspired by the potential to influence the world through technology, I became deeply committed to pursuing a career in this field. Additionally, I’ve always felt a strong responsibility to motivate more young women to join STEM, striving to increase female representation and leadership in the sector.

My first role model was my mother, who instilled in me the values of perseverance and dedication from a young age. Her resilience and wisdom have always guided my personal and professional decisions, encouraging me to pursue my ambitions in the STEM fields. Currently, I am also inspired by the leadership qualities of Golda Meir, whose determination and strength in navigating political challenges resonate with my own challenges in the male-dominated space industry. Both women exemplify the courage and integrity I strive to embody in my role as a leader in the microelectronics sector.

Your studies

During my engineering studies, my main challenges included balancing theoretical knowledge with practical application, a common weakness I worked hard to overcome. My strength was in analytical problem-solving, which helped me excel academically. The opportunity to participate in advanced research projects was invaluable, broadening my technical skills and industry network. However, a significant threat was the underrepresentation of women in my field, which motivated me to advocate for more inclusivity and support for women in STEM.

Believe in yourself and never give up. Pursue your dreams relentlessly and don’t let a male-dominated environment deter you. Your unique perspective and skills are essential for innovation in our sector.
