Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:

As a Sensor Design Engineer at Melexis, my primary responsibilities include developing high-fidelity models and simulations for new sensor concepts.

Your interest in STEM

My interest in STEM was nurtured from a young age by my grandfather. He always encouraged me to explain what I had learned at school by creating mock exams for him, which I would then correct on a board. This playful yet educational activity not only deepened my understanding of various subjects but also sparked a genuine curiosity and love for learning. This early encouragement grew stronger as I delved deeper into physics and mathematics in high school, eventually leading me to pursue a career in engineering.

My first role model was my grandfather, who was also an engineer. He pursued his career in Paris as an engineer in airplanes. His dedication to engineering and his passion for problem-solving greatly influenced me.

Your studies

My strength comes from my background which draws on both theoretical physics and engineering, allowing me to approach problems from multiple perspectives and effectively integrate diverse concepts. My weakness was due to the lack of well-equipped laboratories in my university, making it difficult to apply my theoretical knowledge to practical situations.

I believe success is when hard work meets opportunity. Mine was participating in international research projects and conferences, expanding my network, exposing me to global perspectives, and enriching my academic experience. Competitiveness and rapid technological progress in the field of microelectronic technologies can pose a threat.

My advice to girls and women is to pursue their dreams in areas where they feel they can excel. The STEM field is very broad and offers many opportunities for those who embrace challenges as learning experiences.

You at work

Diversity at Melexis goes beyond accepting different ethnicities, orientations, and social classes; it is also about respecting each other’s opinions on any subject. In our team meetings, we see that no matter how many years of experience one has, their background, or their position, everyone’s voice is heard. This culture of inclusion is strongly promoted by our team lead, who ensures that all team members are encouraged to share their ideas and perspectives, fostering an environment where innovation thrives.

I am most proud of having the opportunity to lead the ‘Stelaxis’ project, which focuses on developing a robotic 1D joint. In my role, I perform simulations and contribute to the measurements, ensuring that our designs are both theoretically sound and practically viable. Identifying the right colleagues to assist with specific tasks is a key part of my role, leveraging their expertise to drive the project forward. Additionally, I promote our project externally by presenting at conferences and engaging with the broader engineering communities.

I also believe that women in corporate environments can and do help each other grow. Women have been remarkably successful in leading and innovating while maintaining a very human approach toward their coworkers. This supportive and collaborative attitude fosters a positive and productive work environment. Let’s embody that and break down the stereotype that says otherwise.

Your point of view

For women who are dominated by their circumstances or environment  and are denied the right to learn, technology offers a lifeline. Through digital platforms, they can access a wealth of educational resources and opportunities, breaking down barriers to learning.

Even AI has made it possible for women to ask whatever they want about anything they need in their lives. This means that any woman, regardless of her circumstances, can seek and receive help on how to navigate challenges without barriers. Technology amplifies women’s voices and provides them with the tools to connect with global networks.

As women have successfully broken into jobs traditionally designated for men, we can continue to push boundaries and prove that we are unstoppable. Today, women are more welcomed and supported by both men and women in the industry than ever before. Immerse yourself in the subject through coursework and practical projects, seek mentors and join professional organizations.

Providing more scholarships to talented individuals that are eager to learn will open doors to a more qualified and diverse workforce. This will ensure that talent is recognized and nurtured regardless of background. Additionally, I hope for a stronger emphasis on sustainability in technology development, promoting a balance between technological advancement and ecological responsibility.

I aim to contribute to significant breakthroughs in sensor technology and work towards leadership roles where I can influence positive changes in the industry.

Your organization´s key sector and mission:
An Italian multinational company, one of the world’s leading steel plant manufacturers.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:

I have been in charge since I joined the company of managing and following internationally, as an IT department, the Sales and Marketing areas. I am Service Owner of the company CRM and other applications used by the above two areas. I follow projects on the services of my responsibility and I support WW users. Finally, I assist a younger team colleague as a mentor.

Your interest in STEM

I started studying STEM subjects when I was in high school, of all the school subject’s computer science was the only one I liked and studied willingly. So, after I graduated from high school, I wanted to continue my learning in a more hands-on school where there were a lot of practical subjects in addition to theoretical study, where there was a chance to get a closer look at what would be the working world.

My role model who inspired and encouraged me to follow the path I took was my high school teacher, whom I still respect for her brilliance. I was also able to meet many people during these years in the company from whom I could take examples.

Your studies

Beyond the different study subjects of varying difficulty, the biggest challenge was dealing with classes throughout the course of the pandemic, and then starting to be part of the real world of work.

Embarking on this path means entering an ever-changing world; it is a challenge that pushes you to learn and know more and more. Joining this industry opens up a world of knowledge that never disappoints.

You at work

In just three years with the company, I have been able to grow a lot, both in the business and personal spheres. This company has given me the opportunity to face many challenges that have always taught me new things. In addition to learning a trade, I have been able to specialize in the role of service owner of business applications with their responsibilities, I have learned how to deal with critical situations and issues by dealing with high-level people.

The field of IT is all about exploring based on skills and what you like. One can range in all kinds of subjects in this field, managing to find the right place for everyone.

Your point of view

The real question is how can women empower technology and this field? Like most of the sciences, this is a predominantly male field, but even though there are few women they bring great studies and expertise to it.

A woman’s touch and mind can turn everything around.

I would like to see a change in the ideology that is there today regarding the definition of jobs done only for men.

To finish with

I see the opportunity to take on daily new challenges, small or big; the primary goal is to learn and grow professionally and personally step by step.

Meriam Ben Moussa

Your organization´s key sector and mission:
IDEMIA StarChip is a division of IDEMIA specialising in hardware and chipset technologies for a wide range of applications, including SIM cards for telecommunications, smart cards for secure payment and biometric identity documents (passports, ID cards, health cards) and smart cards in telephones.  Our mission is to design and manufacture secure microcontrollers that meet the highest standards of security and performance.

Please tell us briefly about your role in the company/organization:

I’m a digital engineer, designing digital circuits. I’m the technical lead on a project, so I work with other engineers to integrate complete systems. I also design, verify and integrate with other components to create functional and reliable products. Designing a product requires a lot of code, a lot of verification and R&D, and because we’re working on banking and identity products, there’s also a lot of security to integrate.

Your interest in STEM

Like many girls, I faced obstacles and discouraging remarks, saying that I couldn’t do it and that it wasn’t the right field for me. At first, I wasn’t particularly interested in science, especially maths. Over time, however, my perspective changed, and I could not see myself following a literary path. In high school, my technology teacher told me that studying medicine wasn’t for me, pointing out that I was ignoring an area in which I excelled. He encouraged me, even going so far as to talk to my parents. From that moment on, I knew that engineering was for me, and I followed that path with determination.

My inspiration has been and always will be my mother. From an early age I saw her working hard at an important job. Her independence and strength of character shaped the person I am today. I wouldn’t be the person I am without her. She inspired me from the very beginning and continues to do so every day.

Your studies

I did well in high school, but my biggest challenge was arriving in France. As a Tunisian, coming to France to finish my engineering degree was a real challenge. Combining my life as a student with that of a foreigner in a new country, especially for the first time away from home, was not easy. I had to work and study at the same time, which made me feel like I had to work twice as hard as everyone else. The pressure was intense, because I couldn’t fail with so many expectations around me. My challenge was not only academic, but also to succeed despite the weight of my family.

The most important piece of advice I can give is not to be afraid of asserting yourself. We often have good ideas, but we don’t always have the courage to express them. Another piece of advice is to go where others don’t dare to go, because that’s where we can shine the brightest. Finally, there are no bad questions; you just have to ask them and always stay curious. In a field like science, curiosity is essential. If we don’t question ourselves and look for answers, we can’t progress. Especially in R&D, where research means never taking anything for granted. Every piece of information must be examined from every angle to check its current and future validity, knowing that this future is constantly evolving.

You at work

When I arrived, there was already a Women’s Rights Day webinar showcasing women’s careers in the company, which was an excellent initiative. I was the second woman to join the digital team since Starchip was founded, which was something new for them. We have been working to achieve 50/50 parity in the team and we have succeeded. There are now 3 women and 3 men and I’m very proud of that. Achieving parity is a challenge because the work has to start much earlier. It’s difficult to recruit women, not because there aren’t enough candidates, but because few women are interested in these fields at school. Even at engineering school, only one tenth of the students were women.

What’s more, in terms of diversity, our team of forty people is very international, with members from Venezuela, Senegal, Brazil, Italy, Indonesia, Morocco and me from Tunisia.

I’m proud to have made my parents proud and to have risen to the occasion. For me, That is my greatest achievement.

For me, there’s only one golden rule: never let anyone tell you what you can or can’t do. If you believe in your ability to achieve something, don’t pay attention to other people’s opinions, just go for it.

Your point of view

Salaries are often higher in technology, giving women valuable financial independence that broadens their horizons. As a woman working in an often male-dominated field, it is an incredible source of strength to be one of the few female voices in a meeting, discussing a subject that you have mastered. Although it can be difficult at first to feel like you don’t belong, it’s hugely empowering to finally be listened to. As a young female graduate, going into a meeting with men with decades of experience and defending your ideas can be challenging. They may be ignored at first, but with persistence they will eventually be taken seriously because they bring a fresh perspective that is often seen as innovative and valuable.

I’ve got plenty! Microelectronics is an exciting field in many ways. It offers constant innovation and diversity, from aeronautics to smart cards. Never repetitive, it always offers new challenges and opportunities. In microelectronics, you can delve into fields such as cryptography, with dynamic research and a multitude of these emerging every day. For those with a thirst for knowledge and a love of novelty, this is a field where there is no room for boredom.

I’ve noticed that the authors of many research articles are often men, which reflects a gender imbalance in the field. There is a lack of female expertise, especially in certain areas. If I had to pick one improvement, it would be to see more research conducted and published by women, and an increase in female expertise in all aspects of the microelectronics field.

To finish with

I’d say seriousness, because in this field you have to be rigorous. Dedication is also crucial, because this job requires total commitment to your work. And finally, thoroughness, because the smallest mistake can have far-reaching consequences.

In a few years’ time, I’d like to have deepened my expertise in my field and acquired a wide range of additional skills. I also plan to manage a larger team, with a higher proportion of female graduates.
