Initially, I was more drawn to the humanities and literary sciences. However, when I was 18, I decided to pursue an engineering path, marking a turning point in my career. This shift reflected my growing interest in scientific and technical subjects, despite not having a traditional background in STEM from the start.
Your organization field and mission
At CEA-Liten, within the framework of INES, our mission is to advance research in renewable energy technologies, focusing particularly on photovoltaics. Our goal is to push the boundaries of innovation, meet industrial challenges, and uphold scientific excellence while maintaining the safety of our teams and ensuring we contribute to the energy transition in a sustainable and inclusive manner.
Please tell us briefly about your role in the company / at your organization:
As a department head at CEA-Liten, I manage a team of around 90 researchers across three laboratories. My responsibilities are both strategic and operational. I oversee technical aspects of research, manage partnerships, and ensure that our work not only advances scientific knowledge but also has industrial and societal relevance. In addition, I serve as an ambassador for our areas of expertise, representing our department internally and externally.
Your interest in STEM
My aunt played a pivotal role in shaping my career. She introduced me to applied research, a field that captivated me immediately. Although I initially considered journalism because of my love for inquiry and exploration, I found that research allowed me to ask questions and seek answers, much like journalism, but within the scientific realm.
Your studies
One of the biggest challenges I faced was integrating into an engineering school without having a solid foundation in scientific subjects. The first two years were particularly demanding, and I had to quickly adapt and learn how to be efficient. This challenge not only tested my abilities but also confirmed my interest in the field of engineering.
My advice is to accept that you don’t need to be perfect in everything, especially in higher education. Women often feel the pressure to excel in all areas, but it’s crucial to prioritize and choose your battles wisely. Dare to take opportunities and don’t limit yourself. I often think of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s quote: “If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.”
You at work
One example that resonates with me is my experience at IMEC, where I had access to on-site childcare, allowing me to focus on my career without sacrificing my family life. At CEA, a similar approach exists, with support for women balancing their personal and professional lives. These initiatives help ensure that women can pursue their careers without guilt or having to choose between their family and professional goals.
I am particularly proud of the dual challenge I overcame early in my career—having my first child while simultaneously setting up a new technology platform and team at IMEC. I managed to balance both roles successfully, thanks to the support I sought, and achieved all my goals. Another moment of pride came after the COVID-19 pandemic, when I re-energized my teams and led them to significant scientific and partnership achievements.
I encourage young women to dare to pursue their ambitions and not let fear or societal expectations hold them back. Seize opportunities, even if they seem intimidating. It’s important to realize that success comes from prioritizing, not perfection, and to accept that no one can do everything at once.
Your point of view
Technology provides women with the tools to innovate, create, and solve problems in a variety of fields, particularly STEM. It can help level the playing field by offering access to education, resources, and opportunities that may have been limited in the past. With the right support and structures, technology can help women thrive in traditionally male-dominated sectors.
For those interested in microelectronics, I recommend diving in without hesitation. It’s a growing and dynamic sector, full of opportunities. Be curious, continuously learn, and seek out mentors who can help guide you. The field offers immense potential for innovation, and women have much to contribute.
By 2030, I hope to see a significant shift towards greater diversity and inclusion in the microelectronics sector. We need to create environments where women feel welcomed and valued, with equal opportunities to contribute and lead. Promoting inclusivity will be key to ensuring the sector thrives and meets the challenges of the future.
To finish with
In my role as department head, I value both humanity and high standards. It’s important to support my colleagues holistically, allowing them to express their identities and personalities while excelling in their skills. I believe in fostering an environment where people can grow and achieve their goals, in their own way.
The next major challenge I foresee is supporting the growth of photovoltaic gigafactories in Europe. This will involve guiding R&D teams through an acceleration phase, overcoming industrial barriers while upholding our societal and environmental values. It will also be important to continue promoting diversity and inclusion, ensuring that women have a strong presence in this transition.
In 2030, I hope to be actively contributing to the successful scaling of the photovoltaic industry, driving technological innovation while maintaining a focus on inclusion and sustainability. I envision playing a role in bridging industrial and societal goals, ensuring a balanced and forward-thinking approach to energy transition.
